Hot Work Permit and Precautions

Generally authorized place to conduct Hot Work onboard is the Engine Room Workshop.

if a section (pipeline) etc can be disconnected from the place and taken to workshop then Hot work permit will not be required. 

Content of Hot Work Permit

  1. Name of vessel
  2. Location: Sea\Port\Anchorage 
  3. Reason
  4. Date
  5. Permit Valid:    To and From 
  6. Any other permit (click here)  which will be used ( enclose work , cold work, working aloft, squeezing etc)
  7. Last Cargo
  8. Tank cleaning required 
  9. Concentration of Gases : Benzene\H2S\HC\O2\ Other gases as per MSDS
  10. Responsible officer: Name\ Rank
  11. Engine Room watchkeeper: Officer \ Crew
  12.  Deck Watchkeeper :Officer \ rank
  13. Present \ Predicted Weather : Wind \ Swell\ Current
  14. Signature of Responsible Officer
  15. Signature of Standby Crew
  16. Signature of Master

Precautions

  1. Tool box meeting should be conducted
  2. Risk Assessment should be done.
  3. Illumination should be adequate 
  4. Ventilation should be running.
  5. Safety Officer should take rounds
  6. Company SMS with respect to Hot work should be referred
  7. Company Permission has to be taken.
  8. Risk Assessment, Stowage Plan, Hot work permit etc has to be send to company for evaluation.
  9. If Hot work has to be done in Enclose space then please refer Enclose space blog
  10. There should be No flammable material in the area of Hot work
  11. FFA equipment should be standby.
  12. Portable extinguisher, Fire blanket, Fire Hose and Pressurized Fire line should be kept standby
  13. Has Port informed about  Hot work and Written Permission should be taken.
  14. Welding equipment should be approved and should be working satisfactory
  15. Crew member should be competent for carrying out Hot work
  16. Area should be cordoned off  where Hot work has carried out. 
  17. If Hot Work has to be conducted on Pipeline then it should be drained, washed etc of previous content 
  18. Gas meter and Personnel gas meter  (click here) should be calibrated before use.
  19. Gas check should be done at regular interval
  20. Safety equipment is kept standby 
  21. One person should be standby at all times.
  22. Communication between Bridge\Standby person \ECR should be checked 
  23. Walkie\Talkie channel decided for communication.
  24. Reporting interval should be decided.
  25. Once Hot work is over,  Permit has to be closed
  26. Permit has to be filed for records. 
  27. Company has to be informed Before starting and after finishing of Hot work
