Emergency Shut Down Button

Emergency Shut Down (ESD) Button 

During discharging operation on a Oil/Product/ Chemical Tanker etc, if any emergency situation happens like oil leakage, Pipeline Burst etc happens, Immediately Emergency Shut Down Button has to be pressed.


What will happen when emergency shut down button is pressed?

  1. Cargo Pump will be stopped immediately.
  2. It will reduce the Rate of Leakage from Source.
  3. Action can be taken as per SOPEP\SMPEP (click here).
  4. Crew can contain the oil spill as per their duties.

In an event of emergency, Stopping a cargo pump from Engine Control Room might take time, so to decrease the time, Emergency shut down buttons are provided.

Emergency Shut Down Buttons are placed on various location on ship.

Few location are

  1. Cargo Control Room
  2. Port Manifold
  3. Starboard Manifold.
  4. Near Cargo Pump 
  5. COPT Platform (Cargo Oil Pump Turbine Platform).
  6. In Pump Room near Cargo Oil Pump (COP) ( if its is a Cargo Pump room).
  7. Ship Bridge (If Cargo Pumps can be operated from Ship Bridge).
  8. Convertor Room ( if Ship is fitted with Marflex Pump)

Ship specific Position has to checked.

When ESD has to be tested?

  1. Before discharging Operations
  2. As per Pre Arrival checklist.
  3. As per planned Maintenance System
  4. During Tank cleaning
  5. If any maintenance has been done on Cargo Pump or Associated machinery.
